Areas of value commonly found in collections of old coins and stamps in New Zealand.
More information on any coins and stamps listed can be found by clicking any of the links provided in the text below:
Gold Sovereigns & Half Sovereigns. A long time favourite with New Zealanders. Often found in old coin collections or in jewellery boxes. Because of the size they can be easily missed
Another long time favorite. The silver 1949 Crown. Many collections will have at least one of these. Not as valuable as the sovereign. Silver is not gold.
Silver coins in cases similar to this. They may or may not have a small booklet with them as in the picture. They will consist of sterling silver or higher.
Any sets of coins. They may be all silver or just have one silver coin (often a dollar) in the set. Look for the small information booklet that will give you the coin details
1935 New Zealand silver 3d. Small coin with very low mintage makes it highly collectable. Amazing how many times these little gems come up in collections of coins
Pre decimal New Zealand £sd coins especially pre 1947. Up until 1946 all NZ silver coins were made up of 50% silver. All have a silver content value and are commonly found in coin lots. Price over and above silver depends on their condition.
Old New Zealand banknotes. They came in ten shillings, one pound, five pounds, ten pounds and higher but most commonly the 4 above. Most have value and these values increase with the condition.

Any stamps with Queen Victoria with face to the front. Many old collections will have a few or more of these. Also the side view stamps but they generally have a lot less value.
Known as postal fiscals or revenue stamps. Used to pay govt. charges, fines etc... Increasingly sort after by collectors.
New Zealand Railway Charges stamps. Issued by NZR in the early 1900's as tickets and placed on parcels etc...
1898 New Zealand Pictorials are all very collectable with some valuable stamps to be found amongst the set of 14.
1931 Arms revenue stamps. Took over from the earlier Queen Victoria type listed above. Collectable and a lot have high catalogue values.
1899 NZ Postage Dues. Collectable and very often found as part of old stamp lots or in old stamp albums. These stamps used by the Post Office to make up 'short paid' post.
1891& 1905 Life Insurance 'Lighthouse' stamps. Some good values can be found in these especially the 1891 stamps which are distinguishable by having 'VR' across the face.
